Barbara Hepworth - Explorative sculpture, and miniature casting workshop in collaboration with Just4youonlineuk.

Welcome to the start of some very exciting Zoom And Bloom Workshops.

Artistic expression has been a part of human history since prehistoric times. However, the narrative of humanity's creative journey often overlooks the contributions of women. Through a series of workshops, I aim to spotlight their enduring efforts to combat sexism, race, and class barriers. It is crucial to recognize and appreciate how their perseverance has allowed their art to shape the historical narrative we acknowledge today. So, I invite you to join me and learn more about these very empowering talented creatives in a series of relaxing art workshops.

Starting with Barbara Hepworth.

Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) was a prominent British sculptor and a leading figure in the international art scene. Much of her Art is inspired by the beauty of St Ives, which is where I've been lucky enough to study and learn more about this so very talented Artist.

Known for her modernist and abstract works, Hepworth often explored the relationship between mass and space in her sculptures.

Join me on this very exciting three week Zoom and Bloom workshop where we will learn more about the avant-garde movement, and why Hepworth is considered one of the great earliest movements of female sculpture and abstract art.

Whilst Hepworth is known for direct carving, we will create our carvings slightly differently by using moulding putty, Eco Pour and Air dry clay.

We will incorporate smooth, organic forms and textures using nature to create our very own Hepworth inspired sculptures.

I am looking to modernize my teaching methods, so the Zoom and Bloom Teachings may have a different feel about them, with PowerPoints for a more advanced level of learning.

Week One -  Discover the essence of Hepworth's artistic legacy and understand why she stands out in the realm of abstract sculpture.

In this session, we will sharpen our observational drawing skills using charcoal and ink, focusing on the intricate interplay of line, tone, and texture. Through guided exercises, we'll explore the fundamental elements that define the language of visual art: Line, Tone, Texture, Pattern, Surface, Shape, and Form.

But it doesn't stop there – we'll embark on a journey of inspiration drawn from nature, diving into Organic Shapes and Natural Forms. The landscape will be our inspiration as we create sketches and plan ideas for our upcoming sculpture. In the following week, we'll gather materials from the great outdoors (or you can use what is included in your Zoom and Bloom Pink box)to bring our envisioned sculptures to life.

Join us in unpacking the concepts of Mass and Space, breathing life into both Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional art forms. This week promises a fusion of creativity, exploration, and inspiration, laying the foundation for a transformative artistic journey.

Please look at the list of extra materials, to see if there is anything extra you would like to bring to this class.

Week Two

Think of this question - Barbara wanted her work to be more than just looked at, she wanted it to be felt. How can we do that with our sculptures?

Clay sculpting - How to convey texture - how to transform their ideas from Week One and evidence it in their clay sculpture.

Home work - To use Eco Pour following the same principles of Clay sculpting and bring to Week three.

Week Two - This week is all about artistic exploration, where we unravel the enigma of Barbara Hepworth, renowned as one of England's most influential abstract sculptors. Delve into the essence of her creative genius and understand why her work transcends mere observation to evoke profound feelings.

As we ponder the question Barbara herself posed – how can we make our sculptures more than just visually captivating, but also deeply felt? This week's lesson propels us into the realm of clay sculpting, where we will learn the art of conveying texture and transforming our ideas from Week One into tangible, emotive sculptures.

Our journey extends beyond the confines of the studio, challenging us to engage with nature and our surroundings, just as Hepworth did. Drawing inspiration from her desire for a sensory connection with art, we embark on a hands-on exploration of creating sculptures that resonate on an emotional level.

For homework, unleash your creativity with Eco Pour, applying the same principles learned in clay sculpting. Bring your eco-inspired creations to Week Three, where we will celebrate the fusion of artistic expression and environmental consciousness.

Please look at the list of extra materials, to see if there is anything extra you would like to bring to this class.

Week Three - marks the culmination of our artistic journey, a moment to bring our sculptures to life in bronze, infuse them with colour, and meticulously finish our creations. As we wrap up this transformative experience, we delve into the final chapter with a study of Barbara Hepworth's latest masterpiece, the 'Family of Man.'

In this concluding lesson, we'll not only synthesize the skills and techniques acquired throughout our exploration but also gain a deeper understanding of Hepworth's evolving artistic vision. The 'Family of Man' serves as both inspiration and reflection, allowing us to draw connections between our individual creations and the broader context of abstract sculpture.

As we add the finishing touches to our sculptures, we celebrate the journey of self-expression, creativity, and the embodiment of learned principles. This lesson encapsulates the essence of Barbara Hepworth's influence on abstract sculpture in England, emphasizing the importance of artistic evolution and the power of expressing complex human relationships through art.

Join us in this final week as we complete our sculptures, draw inspiration from Hepworth's legacy, and conclude our exploration of abstract sculpting with a profound appreciation for the transformative nature of art.
